Go to Vancouver, BC!
I recently went to Vancouver for work and had a great time. I stayed in Soma Cottage which was perfect. It is a wonderful studio apartment one block from Main Street. Once I was settled I walked to Ride On Again Bikes and bought a great used mountain bike for about $100. I had brought a lock and I bought a helmet at Canadian Tire. Vancouver has a bike helmet law.
I used the bike to get to work every day. Vancouver is very bike friendly, there are a lot of bike lanes, bike trails, bike shops, bike stands and bike people.
After work, every day, I explored with the bike. I didn't necessarily get very far, but I saw a lot more of the city than I would have otherwise. I actually learned the names of some of the major roads.
The coolest place I saw was Granville Island. I also enjoyed riding on the bike path back to Main Street.
Everywhere I looked I could see the majestic mountains. Everything is very green. I saw the end of a great 10K race, at some wonderful salmon and met a lot of great people.
The public transportation in Vancouver is excellent. There are many buses and a subway that goes right to the airport. The airport is beautiful, too.
