We’ve been playing bocce lately, in the backyard. There’s a bit of a slope, some uneven areas, planting beds (sunflowers and tomatos), a pan of water, garden hose, weeds, and small bits of rodents the cats and dog collected.
The rules are a bit of a mystery to us, they’re printed on the sheet in the case, but we’ve never read them.
Our bocce game is as follows:
First person tosses the little white ball. I know it has a real name, but I don’t know what it is.
Same person tosses a big colorful ball and tries to get it as close to the first ball.
Next person tosses their ball, and play continues until everyone has tossed.
The person whose ball is closest to the little white ball wins. I’m pretty sure there’s more to the game, but we’re pretty happy with it as it is.
Game goes to twenty-one.
Hobo sometimes joins in. He darts through the game at the little white ball, then crouches near it. Although we joke about getting bonus points if we hit the cat - we don’t do it. Instead, we toss it gently and then he tackles it. This is true for the little white ball, and the big colorful balls.
Needless to say, this changes the scoring a bit, usually because we forget what the score was before we started watching the cat.
