When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I gained 35 pounds. I lost the weight in one year without dieting or feeling hungry. There was no tiresome excerise plan, no pills, no fees.
I’ve kept the weight off and am now sharing my secrets to success:
- Eat lots of vegetables. Green beans, corn, carrots, lettuce, tomatos.
- Don’t try too hard to make delicious meals. The kids won’t eat most of them anyway, and they end up in the compost pile. We have the healthiest looking crows and happiest skunks in the neighborhood.
- Don’t buy much junk food. If you’re craving cookies, buy a package of Peggy Lawton cookies. There are three cookies, eat them, and be happy.
- Eat lots of fruit. Apples, strawberries, grapes, bananas, peaches, plums.
- Don’t believe in Acai berries, or other gimmicks. Don’t take pills. The only winners are the people that sell the pills.
- Be active. Work in the yard, walk or ride a bike instead of driving when possible.
- Don’t make many tasty desserts. The kids will eat them to the exclusion of healthy food.
- Take excess candy or goodies to work. That way, you can’t eat them.
- No soda. For kids’ parties, buy cheap soda, in flavors most people don’t like. That way, kids don’t develop a taste for expensive, name-brand soda. Pour it down the drain as soon as possible.
- Don’t feel bad dumping junk food. Remember, it was a waste of money when you bought it, emptying the bag in the backyard is a good thing. Do be careful, though, too much salt may kill the grass.
- Little plates, and little portions work.
- Simple food is good. Sandwiches, fruit, vegetables, salad.
- Buy humanely raised food. It’s more expensive, kinder, and you’ll buy less and think more.
- Check out organic and independent stores. They have good stuff, and it’s usually very pleasant to shop there.
- Drink very little alcohol, but buy good stuff.
- Watch out for added calories like butter, salad dressing, sugar, cream cheese, sour cream. The commercials that claim people are healthier because they eat lots of vegetables with dip are a tad misleading. Dip defeats vegetables.
- Don’t buy fast food more than once a month. That includes all fast food. No burgers, no french fries, no pizza, no donuts, no expensive sweetened drinks, no tacos. Drive home and assemble something. Cereal is fast food.
- Split meals when you go out to eat. Tip well, especially if the server was a good sport about splitting the meal.
- Love yourself for who you are. Strive to be healthy, by your physician’s definition and how you feel about yourself. Remember that all the pretty photos in magazines and lovely people on TV are polished - with photo editing and make-up. Sometimes, they’re not even real people.
- Have as much fun as possible.
