A week or so ago, we noticed a beeping.
Lots of things in this house beep, the refrigerator (door open), dehumidifier (full), cell phones (voicemail, text or dead battery), the smoke detectors (low battery), and a variety of other electronics emit beeps.
Most of the time, we can find the source of the beeping and address the issue, but time, we couldn’t.
After a few days, I was standing the garage thinking about something or looking at something, and I came to the conclusion the beeping was in the garage. This was an important determination for two reasons. First, it meant we could just shut the door to the garage to stop the beeping (it’s summer, the door is usually open). Second, it reduced the area which had to be searched.
Like many garages, ours is a landscape of stuff. Two hexagonal end tables, three bikes (two good, one cheap), Auntie’s desk, a cabinet full of stuff, shelves with stuff, miscellaneous electronics, two buckets of salted road sand, three ladders, a bed and dresser which are being painted … the lawnmower, generator, everything you would expect in a garage. There’s even room for one car.
I had no idea what could be beeping, until finally, my daughter said, “it’s the electric fence.” We call the Invisible Fence that keeps the dog in the yard an ‘electric fence’.
So I called the Canine Company and said, literally, “my box is beeping.” The person on the other end of the line was wonderful. She asked me a few questions, told me I needed a new battery, placed the order and sent it to me. She even told me how to make it stop beeping.
I just finished installing the new battery. It’s not beeping anymore.
So, if your garage is beeping, check your electric fence. If you’re thinking of buying an electric fence, I recommend Canine Company.
I kind of miss the beeping, but I can hear the dehumidifier …
